Stop spending $10 on a bag of oat flour. People often pay premium prices for specialty flours such as almond flour and gluten-free flour, including oat flour. But it’s just oats. And a big bag of oats? Very cost effective.

All you need to make perfect homemade oat flour is a coffee grinder. You can get one for around $20 on Amazon or in stores, and I guarantee you’ll make great use out of it. I use mine for oat flour, of course, but I also use it to grind coffee and spices (another budget friendly tip: whole bean coffee is often more cost-effective than ground coffee, and you can grind it in batches and keep the rest in the freezer so it stays fresher longer).

I’ve come across several recipes that suggest using a blender or a food processor. I’ve tested both methods, and I find both leave behind little pieces of oats rather than yielding a superfine flour similar to store-bought variations. With a coffee grinder, you end up with a perfectly ground and fine flour with no bits of oats remaining, so I highly recommend this method.

Once you’ve blended your oat flour until fine, just transfer it to an airtight container and store it at room temperature. Then, you can use it for any recipes that call for oat flour, like my Carrot Cake Baked Oats or my Peach Cobbler Baked Oats.

Easy Homemade Oat Flour

Homemade oat flour is so much more cost effective than store-bought, and all you need is one ingredient and one kitchen tool – quick oats and a coffee grinder.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quick oats, plus 1-2 tbsp

Instructions

  • ¼ cup at a time, add the oats to a coffee grinder and grind for 15-20 seconds until super fine and no bits and pieces of oats remain.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and use for any recipes that call for oat flour like my Carrot Cake Baked Oats or my Peach Cobbler Baked Oats

Notes

Note 1: I use a coffee grinder and not a blender or a food processor because both options leave behind little bits and pieces of oats. A coffee grinder yields perfectly fine flour that’s similar to any expensive store-bought variations. If you don’t already have one, you can get one for around $20 on Amazon. I love mine and use it for oat flour, coffee and spices, so it’s definitely worth it.
