Homemade Hot Honey (4 Ingredients and 10 Minutes)

Hot Honey is so simple to make at home with a short list of ingredients you probably already have. You'll never go back to store-bought after making your own!

Prep Time 1 minute
Cook Time 9 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 8 tbsp

Equipment

Ingredients

  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 tsp chilies such as Bird's Eye chilies or chili flakes or more to taste (see Note 1)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Combine the honey, chilies and salt in a small saucepan
  • Bring to a simmer over low heat
  • Let simmer for 5 minutes; do not increase the heat or it could burn
  • Dip a spoon into the honey and let it cool then taste it; if you want it spicier, add more chilies and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes (see Note 2)
  • Remove from heat and stir in the apple cider vinegar
  • Strain into a jar or heatproof container (you can skip straining it, but it will get spicier over time especially with fresh chilies)
  • Let cool then store in an airtight container in the fridge; for fresh chilies, use within 1 month and for dried chilies, use within 3 months

Notes

Note 1: My favorite way to make hot honey is using fresh bird’s eye chilies. It makes a super spicy honey with great flavor. You can also use dried chili flakes or any dried whole chilies of choice. Any kind works great here!
Note 2: Fresh chilies will yield a spicier honey than chili flakes. Start with 1 tsp then add up to 1 tbsp to taste.
